Grinding disc material and selection for double disc grinding machines
The material and selection of the grinding disc of double face grinding machine is the key factor to ensure the machining accuracy, efficiency and workpiece quality. The material of the grinding disc directly affects its grinding performance, durability and adaptability, therefore, when choosing the material of the grinding disc, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the material of the workpiece, processing requirements, grinding conditions and economy and other factors.
First, common grinding disc materials
Diamond Grinding Disc
Diamond grinding discs have become the first choice for processing high hardness materials (such as cemented carbide, ceramics, glass, etc.) due to their extremely high hardness and wear resistance. Diamond grits can remain sharp for a long time, providing high grinding efficiency and good surface quality. However, diamond grinding discs are relatively costly and require high processing conditions (e.g. coolant selection and use).
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) Grinding Discs
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) grinding discs are similar to diamond grinding discs in that they have high hardness, high wear resistance and good thermal stability. It is particularly suitable for machining ferrous metals and their alloys (e.g. stainless steel, HSS, etc.), where it exhibits excellent grinding performance and long service life. cBN discs are also more costly, but may be more cost-effective for specific applications compared to diamond discs.
Corundum discs
Corundum discs are made primarily from aluminium oxide and have moderate hardness and wear resistance. It is suitable for machining a variety of metallic and non-metallic materials such as steel, cast iron, copper and aluminium. Corundum grinding discs are low cost, readily available and preferred for many general purpose grinding applications. However, their grinding efficiency and machined surface quality may not be as good as diamond and CBN grinding discs.
Silicon Carbide Discs
Silicon carbide discs are mainly used for machining hard and brittle materials such as glass and ceramics. It has high hardness and good wear resistance, providing stable grinding performance and long service life on these materials. Silicon carbide grinding disc cost moderate, suitable for processing surface quality has certain requirements of hard and brittle material processing.
Second, the principle of grinding disc selection
When selecting grinding discs for double disc grinding machines, the following principles should be followed:
Selection according to the material of the workpiece: different materials of the workpiece on the grinding disc requirements are different. For example, high hardness materials should be selected diamond or CBN grinding disc; and general metal materials can choose corundum or silicon carbide grinding disc.
Consider the processing requirements: processing accuracy, surface roughness and processing efficiency requirements will directly affect the choice of grinding disc. For high-precision and high surface quality requirements of the processing, should choose better performance of diamond or CBN grinding discs.
Consider the grinding conditions: grinding process coolant selection, grinding pressure, grinding speed and other factors will also affect the performance and life of the grinding disc. Therefore, when selecting grinding discs, these factors should be considered comprehensively to ensure the stability and efficiency of the grinding process.
Consider economy: under the premise of meeting the processing requirements, the grinding disc material with higher cost-effectiveness should be selected as far as possible.
